Plot summary[]
Act I[]
Isobel and Max continue their brutal fight, with Isobel egging him on, trying to get her brother to expel the dark energy he absorbed from healing Rosa. He can’t control himself and is about to zap Isobel when Michael arrives to help Isobel. It works enough as a brief distraction but then Max turns his attention back to Isobel. Max collapses from overexertion and his racing heart threatens to short out his pacemaker, so Michael uses his powers to telekinetically regulate Max’s heart. It works and Max comes to, himself again, and he apologizes for his behavior and for everything he has put them through. Liz arrives and races to hug her resurrected boyfriend, but Max is confused, asking, "I'm so sorry, have we met?"
Three days later, the group is back in the lab for further assessment. Liz has been administering the antidote/serum to Max since he woke, but he hasn't regained his memories, and they discuss how to get Max’s memories back. They carry on this discussion in front of him, which is something he points out when he asks them to please not act like he’s not there. Max blurts out that he isn’t comfortable having Liz around because he doesn’t like the idea that a "stranger" knows their alien secrets. Liz leaves to focus on Rosa, and Isobel says she'll talk to Max.
Alex and Maria meet up at “Mexican market at the Pony”, which Maria set up in the parking lot of the Wild Pony bar for extra income. Alex asks Maria if this was the thing she needed his help with, but instead she wants him to go on a mission with her. Before they can take off, an adorable dog runs up and Alex can’t resist picking her up. It turns out her name is Buffy and her owner is Forrest, who says she’s been acting weird recently. Maria thinks it’s because of the impending meteor shower. Alex asks how the two know each other and Maria explains Forrest is helping her organize an open mic night at The Wild Pony. Forrest tries to flirt with Alex but it initially doesn’t go over well. Which makes Forrest think he misread the situation, but Alex reveals that back in high school he had a pet lizard named Willow, and that Forrest did not in fact misread anything.
At the hospital, Kyle goes to the gallery to watch the surgical separation of craniopagus twins, and Steph is already there. Steph discusses how ever since 1947, twin births in Roswell are higher than the national average. She jokes with Kyle saying that maybe it has to do with aliens. They banter, and she asks if he's going to tell her if he has a crush on her, but he playfully says she's "[his] favorite person [he] can't stand." But Steph, apparently displeased with the answer, leaves.
Back at the market, Maria wants Alex to go with her to figure out where her mom got the boots she was wearing when she was found wandering around the desert after her disappearance. They get into Maria's truck to leave.
Also at the market, Max absolutely butchers Spanish as he tries to communicate with a vendor, trying to ask for jerky with no preservatives but instead asking for no condoms. Liz rescues him and they tease each other, getting super flirty. Max tries to say to her, in Spanish, that he's embarrassed, but again messes it up and accidentally says he's pregnant. Max asks Liz out on a date to watch the meteor shower that night. Initially, Liz turns him down, saying he doesn't really know her, but he points out that people who don't know each other go on dates all the time. She agrees to meet him when she gets off work at 7.
Act II[]
Later at Max's place, Michael, Isobel, and Max are hanging out as Isobel puts together an outfit for Max to wear on his date with Liz. Max is texting people, talking about how they’ve all been reaching out since he returned. But admits that he’s worried he can’t reach Jenna Cameron since she is the only one to not have replied to his texts. Michael explains that Max did ghost her, so she’s probably ghosting him in return. Isobel picks out clothes for Max, and when he goes to change she asks Michael if Max seems different.
On their drive to the boot maker, Maria and Alex play a game of "Never Have I Ever". The conversation turns to Alex's attempted relationships with women when he was younger, and they recall the time they played "seven minutes in heaven" in sophomore year in high school. Maria tells him he was her first kiss, which he didn't know, "and [her] first boob graze." She confesses that when they were kids she thought she would marry him one day, and then jokes that when he came out she had to make a whole new plan. Alex delivers his own bombshell: when he kissed her, it was the first time he felt happy touching someone. He wonders out loud that maybe if he had been straight, he wouldn’t have all these bad memories. Maria encouragingly tells him that he also would have the happy memories either, and he holds her hand.
At the Crashdown Cafe, Max shows up for their date, and Liz is still working. She serves him up a Little Green Men milkshake, which is Max's favorite, hoping that, as Max quips, “[her] milkshake will bring all [his] memories to the yard.” He takes a sip and says he doesn’t like mint. Liz is confused since he’s been ordering this particular milkshake since he was 14. She shakes it off though, saying that when people wake up from comas they sometimes have changes in their personalities.
Back with Alex and Maria, Michael calls but Maria doesn’t pick up the phone. Alex asks her why she didn’t bring Michael along instead since "the guy has actual superpowers", joking that all he has is "one good leg." Maria is still upset with Michael, saying that he's destructive and starts fights, so he wouldn’t be the best person to accompany her on this makeshift mission of hers. Alex tries to get her to not give up on Michael, reminding her that Michael acted as though he killed someone for 10 years so that Isobel didn’t have to shoulder that guilt, and he really only kept his secrets to protect his family. Maria asks what will happen to her friendship with Alex once she stops being mad at Michael, but Alex reassures her that they will be okay, saying he would never stop loving her.
Meanwhile, Max and Liz take a horseback ride and it’s her first time on a horse. He tells her a story about his experience at ranch camp one summer, where he was trying to read Lord of the Rings while riding, but then realizes he’s probably told her this story before. Max apologizes, admitting he just wants this first date to be better than their first first date. But Liz corrects him by telling him that they’ve never actually had a real first date. “It’s a first date for both of us,” she says as they take their leisurely ride.
At Planet 7, a gay bar, Isobel’s begins pouring on the flirty vibes with a sexy female bartender, saying she’s looking to "get into the good kind of trouble." She then spots Kyle at a table by himself. The two make eye contact, and Kyle looks a bit exasperated at seeing her.
On the road, Maria and Alex suspect they might be lost. She tells Alex that they could ask Siri for directions, but that she left them to their devices two scarecrows ago. Alex says that it isn’t too late to turn around, but their truck gets a flat tire and they don’t have a spare. Maria’s glad she’s got an armed soldier with her since they’re in the middle of nowhere, but unfortunately Alex doesn't carry his gun when he’s off duty. Suddenly, a man holding an axe startles them, asking them what they're doing on his property. Maria explains they’re looking for the bootmaker, and the man says that’s him. He introduces himself as Travis and invites them in.
Act III[]
Night falls and Max and Liz take a seat under a blanket. He offers her some whiskey before they play 20 questions, and he starts with asking what's the worse thing she's ever done. He claims he wants to rip off the band-aid, but Liz says it took him 20 years to tell her he loved her. To answer his question, she tells him about leaving her ex-fiancé Diego a year ago and didn't even say goodbye. Liz continues talking and says how she loved the work more than Diego, and she even changed her phone number and blocked him on Facebook. She asks if Max is running for the hills yet, but he jokes only to catch the meteor shower, and invites her to come along, showing that he's still interested.
Back with Maria and Alex, Travis creepily offers Alex some milk but he declines. Alex does, however, notice a ring on Travis’ finger and asks if it keeps him from burning in the daylight. Maria comes back inside, complaining about how bad the reception is when she tried to leave Michael a voicemail. Travis offers Maria some milk as well, saying it's from his cow named Jennifer, but she tells him that she’s lactose intolerant. Getting to the point of why they're there, Maria asks if Travis remembers who he sold the turquoise boots to, but he claims he doesn’t remember his customers. Maria shows him a photo of her mother Mimi, he then remembers she bought them and paid with cash. Maria doesn’t think her mom has that much cash, and Travis takes offense thinking she’s calling him a liar. Travis steps outside to give his cows a "lullaby", and Alex immediately asks Maria if Michael is on his way because he gets the vibe that this guy is going to be turning them into "skin suits". She suggests that Alex look for receipts while she tries to get better service and get some help, but Alex is against splitting up. He voices how this is why he doesn’t like horror films because "the gay guy always dies first". After Maria corrects him with her stare, he corrects himself and says, “Or second”. She nods, and leaves him to look while she goes to try to call for help again.
Back at Planet 7, Isobel joins Kyle at his table with drinks. She jokes and asks him if he’s lost or "really, really found". He admits he just hasn’t wanted to hang out at The Wild Pony lately, and Isobel realizes it’s because he wants to avoid Liz now that Max is back. Rather than answering to that comment, he instead tells her that sometimes it’s just nice to be surrounded by people he didn’t go to high school with. Kyle then asks Isobel what she is doing here, and she admits that after Noah, a room full of "straight dudes on the hunt" makes her uncomfortable. She figures that at least here she will feel less like prey. The bartender brings over Meteor Shower Shooters and they toast to feeling "alienated".
During their date, Max confesses to Liz that the worst thing he’s ever done is kill a man on a camping trip. The man came out of nowhere and attacked Isobel. He’s ashamed of it and that leads him to explain why he wanted Isobel to kill him, because he doesn’t want to risk hurting even one innocent person. Liz thinks that coming out of the pod with some memories erased is possibly a protective measure. It’s a clean slate for them, but Max reminds her she was the love of his life according to his siblings. Liz realizes that the worst thing that happened to him was actually connected to her. She leaves, ending to their first date early, thinking that Max is better off without her or his memories of her.
Back at Travis’ place, Travis comes back inside to find Alex looking through his house. Alex tells him that Maria’s mom was taken and showed up weeks later wearing Travis’ rare boots, and they just want some answers. Travis begins singing the 80’s song, “I Think We’re Alone Now” and doesn’t answer any of Alex’s questions. Alex attempts to leave but Travis takes a swing at him with his banjo and points out how Alex has yet to drink his milk. They fight, and Travis picks up a sharp tool and stabs Alex in the chest. Outside, Maria hears Alex scream.
Act IV[]
Maria calls for Alex, and cautiously starts walking toward the house. Travis emerges alone, claiming that Alex attacked him, and purposefully walks toward her. Maria turns to run away telling him to stay back. But instead he offers his condolences.
At Planet 7 and a few drinks in, Kyle and Isobel are covered in face glitter and are dancing together, enjoying each other’s company and getting flirty. Kyle brings up watching the meteor shower and Isobel says she doesn’t like them since her family burst into flames entering the earth’s atmosphere. Kyle feels super guilty until he realizes Isobel’s just screwing with him. She suggests he take her into the bathroom and then suggests some inaudible things in his ear. He seems shocked at whatever it is Isobel said, who shortly thereafter licks and appears to nibble on his earlobe.
At Travis’ place, Maria runs through the corn maze while being chased by Travis who is wielding an ax and still singing “I Think We’re Alone Now”. Maria screams as she runs into Michael, who got her call and arrived to help. He explains he saw her truck and followed her screams. As they’re talking, Travis walks up behind Michael and hits him in the head with the back of the ax, knocking him out, and Maria runs.
Back at Planet 7, Isobel is assuring Kyle she’s the type of alien who only eats humans who enthusiastically express consent with her. They then discuss the merits of casual hookups and Kyle admits he’s six drinks in and finds super attractive. But there’s someone else. Blaire the bartender cuts in shortly thereafter. But it's not Kyle she wants to dance with, and she and Isobel start to dance.
In the corn maze, Maria tricks Travis by using a scarecrow to make it look like she’s hiding behind a wheelbarrow of corn. When he's distracted, she attacks him, grabs his ax, and hits him with it, knocking him back. She runs back to help Michael.
Max is back home by himself, looking through his old books. A bullet falls from one and as he picks it up, he remembers Liz being shot and saving her life.
Still in the cornfield, Maria runs to Michael who seems to be okay now and the two return to the house to retrieve Alex. Who gets out of Travis’ home mostly unharmed.
The trio gather outside the house when Travis seems to appear once more with a shotgun. Maria realizes that's not him and stops Michael from shooting him. The man, who is apparently Travis's twin, shoots the one attack Alex, Maria, and Michael. He then asks if they are all okay.
Act V[]
Travis's twin explains that his brother showed up a few weeks ago and locked him in a shed. He was finally able to escape when Maria and Alex showed up and distracted him long enough. Travis is apparently this way following a paramilitary group's research & development.
At the hospital, Kyle arrives in the gallery, still covered in glitter from Planet 7. Steph isn't there, but he looks into the operating room and is shocked to see Steph on the operating table.
On the roof of the Crashdown Cafe, Liz is crying and drinking from the bottle when Max shows up. His memories have come back and he explains why he kept getting the Little Green Man milkshakes even though he didn't like them. He first ordered a peanut butter blast-off shake, but she brought him the Little Green Man instead, and since she remembered that as his shake order, he went along with it just because he was happy she remembered him at all. He tells her that he is not better off without her, and that he isn’t whole without Liz. He confesses that in fact he had no idea what would happen when he brought back Rosa, but he just wanted to fix the worse thing that ever happened to them. They passionately kiss. When he suggests they go back to his place, she says no. She wants him right now on the café’s roof.
Back at the Planet 7 bar, Isobel is still dancing the Blaire, and they begin to kiss. They then go into the bathroom together.
Michael, Alex, and Maria make it back to Michael’s trailer to treat Alex’s stab wound. Alex quips that he still can’t quite believe he was "Shyamalan'd by an evil twin." Michael tells Alex that it’s going to sting as he tends to the wound. Once Alex is patched up, Michael says he almost lost both of them, and he moves away. Maria tells him that she's here and they kiss. Alex watches, then looks away and says he should go. Maria doesn’t want him to leave, and he says he doesn't want to leave, and she kisses him on the lips. She says that she just wants them all to be safe. She takes Michael’s hand, inviting him to sit with them, and tells him it's okay. Michael sits between them, and together they begin kissing, undressing Michael, and get lost in the throes of passion.
Act VI[]
The following morning, Alex is outside the airstream, on the phone with Sheriff Valenti about the attack the night before. Michael comes out of his trailer and hands him coffee. The two discuss the whole situation with Travis and his brother Trevor; by the time the police got to the scene, the house was on fire and the brothers were gone. Alex asks if Maria’s still asleep as they stand just a few feet from Michael’s trailer, and admits that he never never really thought he would be checking off having a threesome from his bucket list. Michael asks if Alex believes they’ve crossed a line, Alex replies that if someone told him he was going to be having a threesome with his best friend and his first love, he’d ask what circle of hell he is in. However, jokes aside, Alex confesses he felt loved the night before. The two men both admit they thought they’d end up together in the end. Michael doesn’t follow Alex as he walks away. Michael goes back inside the airstream to Maria, who asks, "You're not going to follow him?" Michael tells her he isn't going anywhere, and she says the same, and they kiss.
Outside the Crashdown Cafe, Max and Liz kiss their goodbyes before she has to start work for the day. He tells her he loves her and as he walks away, Liz realizes she still hasn’t said it to him. She blurts out, “I love you,” and can’t believe she didn’t say it for the first time after his milkshake speech, and is shocked with herself for removing his pants first instead. Max, grinning, says that the whole time he was gone he knew she loved him.
Later that day at the Wild Pony, Alex shows up for open mic night. He listens on as Forrest recites an original poem.
Isobel is waiting at Max’s place when he finally returns home from his overnight date. She wants to catch up and demands to hear the scoop on his date. She’s proud to show off her “I got probed at Planet 7” T-shirt from the gay bar. When she tells him she saw Kyle there and she met a lesbian, Max goes "nope" and walks into the bathroom, closing the door. He takes off his shirt and, upon seeing his tattoo of the alien symbol on his back in the mirror, has a memory of himself as a child chained to the floor, and an unseen man walks over to him.

- Production code is: T48.10206.
- The episode is named after the song "Sex and Candy" by Marcy Playground, which was released in 1997.
- Episode writer Rick Montano said that they "really wanted feature queer performers for this episode" and that he "had been dreaming of using Hypnotized by [Years & Years] since season 1".[5]
- Liz makes a milkshake in the episode, and actress Jeanine Mason had to actually make a new milkshake for each take, so she started handing the milkshakes out to the crew.[6]
