The relationship between the alien Michael Guerin and his two human love interests Alex Manes and Maria DeLuca in The CW television series Roswell, New Mexico. It is a love triangle that has progressed with a polyamorous encounter.
History[]
Alex and Maria, along with Liz Ortecho, were best friends growing up. Michael, at age 11, moved from Santa Fe to a new foster home in Roswell and met both of them in school.
At the end of high school in June 2008, Michael and Alex got involved, first kissing at the UFO Emporium. However, Alex's father Jesse Manes caught them together and shattered Michael's hand with a hammer.[1] Alex later told Maria and Liz about his "museum guy", but not that the guy was Michael, and presumably not about the attack from his father. Alex later enrolled in the Air Force and left Roswell, ending his relationship with Michael.
Michael became a regular at Maria's bar, the Wild Pony, and the two developed a friendly banter. Michael can cause problems, such as getting drunk and getting into fights, and Maria bans him for life "about twice a week."[2]
Plot[]
Season 1[]
Michael and Alex meet up again at the New Roswell High School 10 year reunion and begin to rekindle their relationship,[3] but it's off-and-on-again. Maria and Alex are still friends, and Maria comments to him that Michael "got hot", but Alex claims he hadn't noticed.[4] After Alex makes it clear to Michael that things are over between them, Michael hooks up with Maria.[5] When Alex realizes that Maria and Michael are getting together, he finally tells Maria about him and Michael,[6] which leads Maria to feel guilty and pull away from Michael.[7] Alex later tries to open up to Michael, but Michael decides that although he loves him he can't be with him because it's too painful, and he goes to see Maria.[8]
Season 2[]
In the weeks following Max's death, Michael withdraws from both Alex and Maria. Maria invites Michael back to the Wild Pony, but he flirts with Lindsay in front of her, which Maria confronts him about because she thinks it's just to hurt her.[9] Alex and Maria are still friends, and he helps pass out flyers looking for her missing mother. Alex offers Michael his guitar and offers to look into the history Michael's mother with him, but Michael returns the guitar and rejects the offer, saying he wants to be with Maria. Michael later apologizes to Maria and tells her he wants to try again, and she agrees to it on a "casual trial non-exclusive basis".[10]
When Maria learns about aliens and that all of her friends have been keeping many important things secret from her, she gets angry and pulls away from both Michael and Alex.[11] Alex later talks to her, and she'll keep Michael's secret but she needs space, which he tells Michael. Alex and Michael also work together to investigate the history of Michael's mother at the Long farm.[12] Maria and Alex make amends, and he encourages her to not be mad at Michael because he was keeping secrets to keep his family safe.[13]
The trio sleep together
Maria asks Alex to help her investigate the maker of the boots that her mother was wearing when she was found. On the drive, they open up to each other about their past, and they talk about Michael and their friendship. When they need help, Maria calls Michael. After they're attacked and return to Roswell, they patch up Alex in Michael's Airstream. When they're done, Alex says he doesn't want to leave, and Maria kisses him and invites Michael over, and they spend the night together. The next morning, Michael and Alex talk about what happened. Alex agrees with Michael that he felt loved, but he still walks away. Michael goes back into the Airstream to Maria.[14]
Behind the scenes[]
- The day after season 2 premiered in March 2020, showrunner Carina Adly MacKenzie joked that "if [she'd] known the world would be this gloomy when RNM S2 premiered" then "Michael, Maria, and Alex would’ve gone shopping for a throuple-size airstream".[15]
- Carina informed Heather before the season 2 scripts went out to get her feedback on the threesome in Sex and Candy and to make sure she would feel comfortable doing it. Her feedback was, “Holy crap, yes! Let’s do it.” After reading it and really understanding it, I just thought, “This is what the audience deserves.” Also she liked how tastefully it was done since it was Maria's choice and viewed it as "It’s more about the love in the scene than the love making. That’s what made it a story worth telling."[16]
- In regards to the lack of communication between Alex and Maria about Alex's feelings for Michael, Carina Adly MacKenzie stated: "Alex was too ashamed of Michael (not of being gay, which Maria knew, but of Michael specifically) to name him to Maria for 10 years - until he saw Maria as a threat. Until Maria’s feelings had already progressed."[17]

- Fans have referred to the relationship as "Malexa",[18] as "Milexa",[19] and by the character's initials such as "AMM".[citation needed]
