I'm a moderator over at the Charmed Wiki and I was hoping that this Wiki could become affiliated with us. It makes sense for the CW reboots (Dynasty, Charmed, and Roswell NM) to all be affiliated and I think it can be very beneficial for both Wikis. Let me know what the staff for this Wiki decides and thank you in advance!
Hey there. I know you've been busy, but I wanted to check this with you before moving ahead with this, because it's kinda a big change. This wiki is set up to give each version of the characters their own page, which is cool. As part of the wiki expansion to include the new series, pages need to be clearly differentiated from each other, and I want to make sure we're in agreement on how to do it.
One way to do this would be to move the Roswell-related pages to something like (1999), e.g. Max Evans would be moved to Max Evans (1999). The equivalent Roswell, New Mexico page is already differentiated as Max Evans (Reboot). Then the Max Evans page can be a general overview or disambiguation page for all versions of the character, or deleted / forwarded.
As an alternative method, I made a change to the Crashdown Cafe page to basically be a general overview / disambiguation page. It includes short basic information for all versions, then the subpages are specific for each version: Crashdown Cafe/1999 for the 1999 Roswell TV show, and Crashdown Cafe/2019 for the 2019 Roswell, New Mexico TV show. If there was a book version of the page, I would have put it in Crashdown Cafe/Book. I think this setup works for smaller pages, but the character pages will have subpages for galleries, so they might not work well as subpages, i.e. they should stay as Max Evans (Reboot) not Max Evans/Reboot.
So we could do a mix of both ways, or just one or the other. Let me know.
However pages are moved, the links should be updated, which I can do pretty quickly with a bot. So I also want to make sure you're okay with me using a bot on the wiki. All bot edits would be through my bot account ShinigamiBot. Bots do not gain achievements, so it would not affect the leaderboard.
I'd like to avoid disambiguation pages for the characters, since there are only two versions. Thinking that most people use the main page/menus to navigate characters, so there shouldn't be much confusion.
Maybe the reboot pages should be renamed eg. Max Evans (2019)? Kept the pages without year-signifiers for the original show, as it seems to be the most prevalent. What do you think?
Think the Crashdown edit was a great move. And great with the bot! :)
Hey, thanks for the quick response! :D I'm cool with avoiding disambiguation pages. Two pages are easy enough to distinguish from each other.
I like using 2019 for the reboot pages, e.g. Max Evans (2019) instead of Max Evans (Reboot). I would still like the pages for the original 1999 show to have a distinction in the name when there's another page to distinguish it from, e.g. Max Evans (1999), if that's cool? Without a disambiguation page, it'll be clearer if both pages have distinction in the titles.
P.S. I picked up the first book yesterday, which I haven't read before, so I might make a few book-centric pages. :)
The book is entertaining! An easy young-adult quick-paced 90's read. I wasn't expecting Liz to be such an excellent liar, or Kyle to be such a pushy douche. At one point, Liz looks Sheriff Valenti dead in the eyes and says, "I don't believe in aliens," and I was like "damn girl." So yeah, it's fun. Not sure it's a series that I can fall into, so we'll see how many I end up reading.
Unfortunately, it looks like the publisher scanned the book and automatically OCR'ed it to text to make the ebook, and there are a ton of errors. Terrible ebook quality from a professional publisher.
I've requested bot status for the account on the wiki, so I'll get started on those changes once it's approved!
Hey, I've merged the duplicate character infoboxes. One looked like it was copied over from a vampire wiki of some kind and wasn't completely modified for this wiki, so I used the other one and brought over some of the values, and turned the former-vampire one into a redirect. I've made some other small modifications, but let me know if you want anything changed.
Anyway, I wanted to talk to you about the CSS code for the rounded corners. I would suggest adding "overflow: hidden;" under ".pi-europa.pi-background". This fixes the pointy tips at the top and bottom of the infoboxes, keeping the borders nicely rounded without images or headers sticking out. (Doing this also means you can remove the border radiuses from ".pi-europa.pi-background", since they're no longer necessary.)
That all sounds very good and useful, thanks you for that. I've pretty much let Echo Spy take over the design of the page, as I am not that active on this wiki. So, I'd check with them as well regarding layout and template changes. Will fix the infobox CSS.
Would you be interested in becoming an admin? The site could definitely use someone with knowledge of the old show! :)
Thanks for implementing the change! I wasn't aware of Echo Spy's work with the layout, but I just checked out the changes to the workdmark, background, and CSS, and it looks like they're doing a beautiful job.
Thank you so much for the offer. I'm currently an admin on several other wikis, so I think I won't be able to give this wiki the attention it deserves. But I'll be happy to edit and help when I can. Perhaps just a Content Moderator for now? The only admin access I might want is the ability to edit the CSS, since I'm thinking of creating some navboxes so using CSS might be helpful for that, so having admin access would be helpful, but otherwise I'd like to just edit.
Hi Virvar, I'm Mike with FANDOM's Community Development Team! I've done some work on the upcoming Roswell, New Mexico series, creating episode and character pages with what we know so far and even pulled images from the trailer. I was hoping that I could add some of that information to the main page and the wiki nav. I'm thinking a Roswell, New Mexico section in the nav with episodes and characters, and adding a character gallery for the new characters to the main page, along with the series trailer. Is that something you would mind me doing?
Thanks for the reply, Virvar! I've gone ahead and added an entire section for Roswell, New Mexico on the wiki nav since there was enough room for another section. I also added a character gallery to the main page for the new series. I'll keep checking in for new character images to keep it updated since nearly everything is drawn from the trailer at this point.
My name is Jay, and I founded the roswellnewmexico.wikia.com and roswell-new-mexico.wikia.com. Earlier today, The CW ordered five pilots to series, one of them being the Roswell reboot, now renamed "Roswell, New Mexico". I actually created the wiki before they made the official announcement, because I found the show's secret Twitter account beforehand. However, I know that this is the central hub for Roswell, both the OG show and reboot. Thus, I'm asking if you'd like my wikis and their URLs merged into here, and if so, transfer my bureaucrat rights here? As you can see on roswellnewmexico.wikia.com, I created a preliminary design, given what I had. However, I can go further - I'm also an admin on the Pretty Little Liars Wiki and Criminal Minds Wiki, and I'm responsible for the entire design and main pages (minus the background) plus 80% of the coding, along with Altered Carbon Wiki. So, would you like to take my offer and its perks?
Apologies for the delay in getting back! I'm actually fine either way (merging or if you'd prefer to keep them separate), but if you are interested in merging the sites I'd be happy to grant you the necessary rights.
I'm not very active on this wiki continuously, but adopted it to provide some structure.
I would like that the work I've done thus far remains intact, regarding the category structure and general navigational paths.
I think having a condensed wiki would be best - when I created the wiki URLs, there wasn't a lot of traffic as I thought (but it wasn't unexpected given this wiki already has the traffic and is the recognized, official Roswell wiki given Witnessme's message to you underneath mine).
Your current work will remain intact - however, for the reboot, I'm thinking there should be new categories like "Female Characters (Reboot)", "Season 1 (Reboot)", etc. The category system will remain simple however. The navigation bar will remain the same if you wish.
Otherwise, the only changes I see right now is a new color palette in the theme designer, new reboot categories, and a possible main page redesign similar to the Pretty Little Liars Wiki (however, I can coordinate with you on that).
Cool. Feel free to revamp the design. The navigation bar should be updated to include the reboot. And yup, new categories will of course be created for the reboot series. The font for the original Roswell is actually Bank Gothic. The current one is the google font I could find which most closely resembles it.
Alrighty. I've identified the new Roswell reboot logo to be a font called "AF Restropective Roman", but the logo is a heavily modified version of it. The "New Mexico" part is a font I already know. The current wordmark will stay (given if it looks good against a black header) and we'll see if we can get a new wordmark from FANDOM Staff.
Hi Virvar - I recently contacted FANDOM Staff for help on a new wordmark. The wordmark will be the new logo of the reboot - seen here with the "WIKI" part being the same as the "New Mexico" part. However, they want your permission before accepting the request. The message they left me is here:https://roswell.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:3592
Hi Virvar; I'm Amanda with FANDOM's community development team! I'm reaching out to you to see if you are interested in a wiki update. I'd like to edit the mobile main page and add new pages once the reboot is released. Plus I'd like to add the new Roswell (Reboot) page to the main page slider. I also wanted to see if you were interested in turning on Discussions.
In case you are unaware of the feature, Discussions was introduced last year to help communities engage with users and fans. It lives in its own space on the wiki and allows users to interact with other members of the community. It is also mobile friendly, and gives mobile users a chance to contribute and engage with the community, and possibly turn them into wiki editors as well. You can read more about Discussions here.
For more information on migrating forums to Discussions, you can check out this blog over on Community Central that explains everything in detail.
If you have some concerns, Discussions and Forums can exist side-by-side in case you do not want to migrate just yet. However, eventually all Forums will be migrated over to Discussions, so getting ahead of the curve is never a bad idea.
Let me know what you think, and if you want to proceed I can get the ball rolling.
On a different note, I've been meaning to reach out to Community Tech as there's something wrong with the site, but got away from it again.
The pages keep "jumping" and showing site code when you browse thorugh various pages quickly. And sometimes the slider doesn't show up on the front page at all. Might you be able to help me figure out this issue?
