They were born and raised in Roswell however their mother left before they entered High School. Leaving their single father to raise them. Both worked Crashdown Cafe working as a waitress to help him although unknown to Liz at the time their mother left because Rosa found out the truth about her paternity and threatened her with it. Ten years before the start of the series, Rosa got into drugs and struggled with addiction. For a while she dated Frederico, who was also her drug dealer. By April 2008, Rosa appeared to be clean and was no longer seeing Frederico. Liz was getting ready to graduate high school during this time and was frustrated by Rosa's past antics.
Two months later Rosa apparently drove while intoxicated and got into a car accident, killing herself, Kate, and Jasmine. The three were actually killed by Noah. Liz advocated for Rosa to wear her favorite T-Shirt for the burial instead of their dad suggested. After the funeral Liz immediately left town and chose Regenerative Medicine as her major. Because of the hurt over Rosa's death Liz rarely returned home to visit until she moved back.
