Helena Ortecho is a character in The CW 2019 television series Roswell, New Mexico. She is the mother of Liz and Rosa Ortecho and the ex-wife of Arturo Ortecho. Helena Ortecho is portrayed by Bertila Damas.

History[]
In 1988, she had an affair with Jim Valenti, which resulted in Helena becoming pregnant. She gave birth to her first daughter Rosa on February 9, 1989. She was married to Arturo Ortecho at the time, and Rosa was raised as Arturo's child without Rosa's knowledge.
When Rosa was 12, Helena was drunk and took Liz and Rosa for a drive to take them back to Mexico. She flipped the car, and Rosa furiously yelled at her for endangering Liz's life.
By 2008, Helena was using drugs. At some point, Rosa stole pills from her mother to get high.[1] Helena told Liz that she would be there before her dance, but Helena didn't show up.[2] After Rosa's death in June 2008, Helena left town.
Plot[]
Liz mentions to Rosa that their mother is in Nebraska "shacked up" with a guy named Dirk.[3]
As part of Arturo's goal to gain citizenship, he and Liz ask Helena to sign over her half of the Crashdown Cafe. Helena unexpectedly arrives back in Roswell to visit, which upsets Liz and Rosa. At Helena's insistence, Liz and Arturo have her over for dinner, and Max Evans joins them. Rosa gets upset, causing her radio to go haywire, so Liz calls Isobel over to help keep Rosa calm. Max also gets upset with Helena and inadvertently blows the circuits. After Liz realizes that Helena broke into their safe, she confronts her about her behavior and about her affair. Helena finally signs over her half of the diner, and takes Arturo's mother's ring. Meanwhile, Rosa breaks into her mother's car, steals a bottle of pills, and sets the car on fire.
Max later confronts Helena outside the police station. He tells her that he did some digging and realized that her new boyfriend, Dirk, ran for city council, and none of the papers mentioned that Helena had two daughters, and he guesses that means that her boyfriend doesn't know about them or Helena's life in Roswell. She returns the ring to Max and leaves Roswell, and Max gives the ring back to Liz.[4]
