The 1947 UFO Crash refers to the event in which an alien ship crashed on Earth in the science fiction TV series Roswell, New Mexico.
The crash brought aliens to the town of Roswell, and conspiracy theories around the event shaped the town.
History[edit | edit source]
On June 14, 1947, an unidentified flying object (UFO) crashlanded onto Foster Ranch located in Roswell, New Mexico. According to crash survivor Noah Bracken, the alien ship was carrying refugees and the crash was caused by a stowaway aboard the ship. When the Air Force arrived at the crash site, they began murdering the aliens.[1] According to Master Sergeant Jesse Manes, the aliens started the violence that night, and killed Hector Valenti. Most of the alien survivors were apprehended by the Air Force.
The event prompted the creation of Project Shepherd, an operation run by the Air Force to ensure the security of the residents of Roswell and planet Earth. Project Shepherd continued to be run by the Manes and Valenti families until it was officially shut down by the Pentagon in 2010.
The crash and the existence of aliens was covered up by the United States Air Force, leaving the residents of Roswell to believe that the crash was just an urban legend. Conspiracy theories prompted the rise of alien-themed businesses in the town.
